Horse & Animal Bedding
Completely strip the stall of all pre-vious bedding and add 4 to 5 bags of pellets for an average 10x10 stall which will last over a week without re-bedding depending on your horse's excretion habits and how much time it spends in its stall. DO NOT add too much bed-ding in the beginning as pellets ex-pand greatly as they absorb mois-ture. Too much bedding will make it more difficult to clean and will not allow the stall to ventilate properly.
For cleaning just remove the solids and the wettest spot(s) with a ma-nure fork. You can mix the remain-ing wet areas into the rest of the bedding. The purpose of this is to have the drier bedding absorb the moisture. If the bedding becomes too dry or dusty, just sprinkle wa-ter as needed and mix thoroughly. The optimum moisture content is reached when the bedding feels slightly damp to the touch. Once this bedding process is started, you can maintain a comfortable base with an even consistency by adding more pellets to suit your preference.
Stable Cleaning
Cleaning your stable is going to be a little different from using shavings and if you have used scoop-able cat litter before you will notice the similar-ities. The urine will clump into a puck-like shape, which you can easily scoop out. Keep in mind that some-times the urine 'puck' will break apart so just take out any of the solid parts and leave the rest in the stall. The moisture from the excess urine will help the product to continue expand-ing. Odor should not be an issue as Aspen is a natural deodorizer.
Once you have picked out the manure and urine, thoroughly mix the bedding in the stall and pull the fresh bedding in from the side of the stall to the mid-dle. If the bedding seems a bit dusty then sprinkle it with some water. This can be done frequently, as it will help the bedding to continue expanding.
You will need to add approximately 1-2 bags of fresh bedding to your stalls each week using the process outlined above. You will probably want to com-pletely strip and restart each stall eve-ry 2-3 months, which will give the stalls time to air out and disinfect properly.
Using pellets may require changing the way you manage your stalls:
- *Different horses (especially younger ones) may require the use of more bedding owing to their stall habits.
- * The product performs best on stall mats, cement and wood floors.
